When MrB & Mr S’s group practiced Paper B questions, we found we needed work on sequences and ratio.

You lucky students! There are lots of sites appearing on the Internet at the moment that contain short video lessons on aspects of maths and other subjects. If you’re having trouble with a particular area of maths or you’d like to see the kind of maths you might cover at secondary school, try these videos.

Another good maths site that explains different areas of maths is mathwithlarry. Some of the lessons are text but some have video too - the videos are on the tvlesson site too.

Watch this video of sprinters in a 100m race. This is a metaphor for your run up to SATS. Look how the sprinters keep on going to the very last metre.
If you look carefully, you’ll see some of the athletes fade away before they get to the line and others keep on working hard to overtake at the very last metre. Be like the ones that keep going to the very last metre!

Some of our genius mathematicians went to the annual Sheffield Pop Quiz. They had a great time doing difficult maths problems; and brought along their parents - who also had a great time. The teams did very well and could very well have done even better…

Here’s a couple of the questions they answered:

I have a solid shape with five flat faces, eight edges and five corners. What is my shape?

I have a 6×6 times table grid. Sum all of the numbers on the L-R downhill diagonal.

Maths

Because we don’t want you getting bored during the Easter Holidays, here are some tasks to stop your brain from turning into a lovely pink sponge.

These maths questions are all paper B questions from previous SATs, which means you can use a calculator! There are 20 questions for each level (4 & 5). If you are in the JG maths group and you are finding some of the level 4 questions easy, or if you fancy a challenge then you should try some of the level 5 questions. You won’t be able to do them all, but you will be able to do some of them, which means more points.

We have given you the answer sheet to download after you have had a go at the questions. Do not look before, you are only going to be cheating yourself - you won’t be able to do it in the SATs.

We have also given you some Science work to have a go at throughout the holiday. These are all designed to develop your higher order THINKING skills. We have been doing some of this work in school already. There are also some SATs questions and there are the answers to check your work after completing it.

We’ve been told by Albert, a bloke we met down the allotments, that there are goblins that live at the bottom of the cliff next to the school field. Apparently, they come out at night and stage re-enactments of Barnsley’s FA Cup triumphs over Chelsea and Liverpool.

This information is published on the Internet and Albert doesn’t look too shifty, so the story must be true.

Now have a look at the other games on the Realmath site.  In fact, the Realmath site is a superb one for Mr B’s maths group - it’s exactly at your level.  Part of your homework is to explore this site.

Yes, it seems too good to be true… and it is.  Have a look at this graph game about the 2002 FA Cup final - learn about the way graphs describe real life situations… and see if number 7 was really offside!
